June 9, 2010
EAGLE-VAIL, Colorado –Police say they responded to a fight that occurred after a soccer game on the fields near the old Battle Mountain High School in Eagle-Vail on May 30.
A deputy spoke with a 36-year-old man who said he was a referee for the soccer games. The man said a goalie didn’t like the calls he was making. The ref said he warned the goalie and eventually ejected him from the game.
As the players were shaking hands, the goalie was seen walking toward the ref. The referee said the man kicked him two or three times and punched him two or three times. He said he got kicked in the head as well as the torso. The deputy observed a couple small red marks on the referee’s head.
The goalie’s teammates agreed that the referee made some bad calls and said he was very upset about losing the game.
A 27-year-old man told the deputy he was the head of the soccer league there and handed him a U.S. Amateur Soccer identification card for the goalie, who had left the scene.
Police contacted the 25-year-old suspect on June 3 and gave him a summons for assault.
