Hut-to-Hut event features history and route-finding in backcountry
February 2, 2013
Adventurers and book lovers are invited to a storytelling event with longtime guides and backcountry explorers Donny Shefchik and Will Elliott. The Feb. 4 virtual trip around the famed 10th Mountain hut system is a partnership between The Bookworm of Edwards and Paragon Guides to celebrate the local spirit of adventure.
Learn about the development of the huts, their constant evolution and safe backcountry practices for experiencing them today. Shefchik and Elliott will tell stories, share photography and answer questions about their favorite outdoor places. In addition, The Bookworm has “10th Mountain Hut Guide” by Warren Ohlrich, “Soldiers on Skis” by Flint Whitlock and various “Trails Illustrated Maps” in stock for attendees wishing to learn more or launch their own adventure.
Shefchik is Paragon’s field director and senior guide. As a junior racing coach and certified alpine ski instructor, he began developing a personal teaching style that is evident in his guiding.
Shefchik’s enthusiasm and desire to share the rewards of the mountains, as well as numerous certifications and his mother’s gift for cooking, has shaped Paragon’s mission to reap the benefits of the mountains and the people who spend time in them.
Elliott grew up in the Paragon family and has spent countless nights in the mountains. After graduating from Denver University in 2005, he moved back to the Vail Valley and resumed guiding ski mountaineering trips in the winter and rock climbing, camping, trekking and mountain biking expeditions in the summer for Paragon Guides.
