Jack Lucas, 1957-2009, worked in Vail Valley
Ryan Summerlin July 24, 2009
Jack Lucas, who worked in the Vail Valley, passed away July 19 at University Hospital in Aurora. Jack was 51.
He was born on Sept. 18, 1957, in Bowling Green, Ohio. His parents are Roy and Annabelle (Trujillo) Lucas.
Jack moved to Leadville with his family when he was a toddler and remained here the rest of his life. After finishing high school, Jack married Ruby Espinoza in 1975 and together they had two children.
Jack went to work at the Gilman Mine and later the Climax Molybdenum Mine, where he remained until it closed. He then worked in construction and started his own roofing business called Eagle’s View Roofing in the Vail Valley area.
Later, Jack went on to become the chief engineer at The Seasons Resort in Avon and also worked at The Wren in Vail and lastly with Don Hinton Companies.
Jack had a great sense of humor and loved to play jokes on people that always kept them laughing. Jack had a happy-go-lucky nature about him that made him many friends during his life.
He also loved his truck and spent many hours four-wheeling. He enjoyed fishing, shooting guns and watching football on TV. His favorite NFL team was the Raiders. Jack also liked watching programs like Dallas, Bonanza, Gunsmoke and, as he would call them, Little “Casa” on the Prairie and Two and a Half “Vatos.”
But what he loved the most was spending time with his family. Jack was so very proud of his children, Audrey and David, and all their accomplishments. The best part was that he never missed an opportunity to let them know the pride he took in the way they led their lives and how much they meant to him. Jack also spent as much time as he could with his parents, whom he affectionately called Mazzy and Pops.
One thing Jack was never without was his Budwieser. He called it “nectar of the gods.”
Jack is survived by his children, Audrey (Julian Vigil) Lucas, of Westminster and David Lucas, of Lakewood; his parents, Roy and Annabelle Lucas, of Leadville; his dear friend and companion, Martha Pinon, and her children, of Leadville; and brothers and sisters Lawrence (Deborah) Vigil, of Gypsum, Leroy Lucas, of Las Animas, Colo., June (Walter Werner) Lucas and Vera (Tim Martinez) Lucas, both of Leadville.
Mr. Lucas is also survived by his nieces and nephews, Eric Martinez and Jonathon and Jessica Espinoza, as well as numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
The rosary and Mass of Christian burial will be held Monday at Annunciation Catholic Church in Leadville. The Reverend Gus Stewart will officiate and Joelle Montoya will sing accompanied by Neil V. Reynolds. Honorary pallbearers are Eric Martinez, Jonathan Espinoza, Lawrence Vigil, Leroy Lucas, Julian Vigil, Walter Werner, Bobby Kimble, Nikolas Martinez, Jr., Robert Trujillo, Bill Sobkowicz, Davin Joe, Daniel Espinoza, Ernest Lucas and Ivan, Daniel and Aron Pinon.
