EAGLE — Steve Leigh broke a chain, Halsey Lucas vomited — twice — and Barry Parent crossed the finish line bleeding from the face. The Vail Recreation District mountain-bike town series races are officially underway.

Approximately 250 riders took to the dusty trails off Arroyo Drive in Eagle Ranch on Wednesday for the Eagle Ranch Classic, the first of seven mountain bike races in the summer-long series. The Eagle Ranch Classic race took place on several of trails in the Eagle Ranch area including Second Gulch, Mayer Gulch and the popular Bailey’s loop downhill ride.

The overall low time of the day was recorded by Eagle-Vail’s Josiah Middaugh, a professional triathlete who won the Xterra World Championship in 2015.

Eagle’s Jay Henry said third place finisher Cristhian Ravelo and he used a team strategy to try to take Middaugh out of the race.

“It didn’t work,” Henry said after crossing the finish line in second.

Karen Jarchow won women’s pro event.

DUST ‘EM

Part of Henry’s strategy was to try to get two bike lengths ahead of the person behind him on the Bailey’s downhill section.

“Then you get the dust in front of you, and you can’t see what you’re going through,” Middaugh said. “So then you have to back off even more to give the dust time to settle.”

Just finishing a five-day stage race on the roads of New Mexico in the Tour of the Gila, Ravelo got back on his mountain bike this week for the first time this season.

“It was a tight race out there. You couldn’t make a lot of mistakes,” Middaugh said. “We kind of took turns, Jay led a lot, Cristhian was in there ahead of me for a while.”

Ravelo, a Battle Mountain High School graduate who races professionally around North and South America, says he plans on spending more time in Eagle County this year doing local races like the Eagle Ranch Classic.

“I’ll be back in Eagle next weekend for the Firebird race” he said.

CRASH COURSE IN MTB

Henry said his favorite parts of the course on Wednesday were the single track sections on Bailey’s and Mayer Gulch.

“I took a practice run down Bailey’s on Tuesday night,” Henry said. “That sagebrush will grab you underneath your bike so quick, if you go into it.”

It was a lesson Barry Parent learned the hard way on Wednesday. A lifelong skateboarder, Parent hasn’t participated in a mountain0-bike race in a long time.

“I just started to wash out a little and the sage ate me up,” he said.

He crossed the finish line covered in lacerations.

“I don’t get this beat up skateboarding, that’s for sure,” he said. “Mountain-bike racing is gnarly.”

While Parent hasn’t raced mountain bikes in a while, he has in fact raced before. That’s not the case for Steve Leigh, the host of the morning show on local radio station KZYR.

“I’ve never raced a mountain bike before,” he said on Wednesday.

So what made him decide to finally race?

“I lost a bet,” he said.

A Steelers fan, Leigh bet the Vail Recreation District’s Beth Pappas that the Broncos would lose the Super Bowl.

“I told him if he lost, he had to do the first mountain-bike race of the year wearing a Broncos uniform,” Pappas said.

Leigh raced in a Von Miller jersey.

“It kind of rode up on me,” he said. “Not the most comfortable for racing.”
