Vail Daily obituary: John Wolf Max Eschenlohr, 1936-2013

John Wolf Max Eschenlohr, 77, passed away Monday at his home in Avon after a 15-month battle with cancer.

John was born in Stettin, Germany, on June 26, 1936, and grew up in Altstadten, Bavaria. When he was 16, his family emigrated to Ontario, Canada, where John received a Bachelor of Science in engineering and business from the University of Toronto followed by an MBA from McMaster School of Business.

In 1958, John married Virginia Lockyer, of Napier, New Zealand. The young couple lived in Burlington, Ontario, before moving to Short Hills, New Jersey, where they spent 30 years. John’s love of the mountains attracted him to Stowe, Vt., where the family still maintains a home. The Eschenlohrs retired to Colorado to be closer to their daughters and four grandchildren. An avid skier, golfer, bike rider, mountain climber and traveler, John embraced life to its fullest.

John’s career started at Proctor and Gamble in Hamilton, Ontario in 1959. Eight years later, he accepted a new position at Proctor and Gamble’s Port Ivory plant in New Jersey. In 1971, John joined Engelhard Minerals and Chemicals Corp,, where he rose to vice president and general manager of the firm’s refinery in Newark. Before retiring at age 60, John was executive vice president with the Metals and Catalysts Division at Degussa Corporation. He was also an officer of the company and on the board of directors.

John is survived by his loving wife, Virginia; his two daughters, Jacqueline Eschenlohr and Kelly Wheeler; and four grandsons, Kendall, Luke and Robby Wheeler and Tyler Lemon. He is also survived by his sister, Ingrid Muensterer.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Jan. 2 at Vail Interfaith Chapel at 19 Vail Road in Vail.
