Vail Daily obituary: Barney Dill, 1966-2014
February 19, 2014
Surrounded by his wife and family, Dudley Barnes (Barney) Dill, 47, died peacefully on the evening of Jan. 23, after a valiant battle with cancer.
While still a grade-school student in his hometown of St. Louis, Barney became hooked on skiing during family ski trips to Vail. His love of Colorado guided many of his important career and life decisions.
Barney earned a B.A. from Vanderbilt University and an MBA from the Olin School of Business at Washington University. After earning those degrees, Barney focused his career on Colorado companies including sales, marketing and brand management positions at Anheuser Busch, Coors Brewing Co. and several technology companies.
He enjoyed working in Colorado, where he could take weekend trips to the slopes and fish the mountain streams. Working in Denver also brought Barney to the love of his life, Carrie, and a mountain-top weekend wedding in Vail. Somewhat predictably, Barney and Carrie eventually moved from Denver to Edwards, where Barney traded the brewing and technology industries for real estate and where his strong interpersonal skills and business acumen helped him build a successful career.
When not working or spending time with his family, Barney was often found knee deep in the Eagle River putting the right fly in just the right spot, and he was rarely found out and about without at least one of his beloved four-legged companions. Barney will always be remembered for his warmth, optimism, wit, laughter, generosity, integrity and faith.
Barney was preceded in death by his mother, Louise (Titchie) Dill and uncle (M. Reese Dill), and is survived by his loving wife, Carrie Mills Dill, and their beloved 6-year old daughter, Reese; by his father, Charles Dill Sr., and his stepmother, Martinna Dill, of St. Louis and Vail; his older brother, Charles Dill Jr. (Cindy and their children, Charles III and Louise, of Stamford, Conn.) and by three stepbrothers, including John Howell Jr. (Virginia and their children, Jack, Ford and Ginny, all of St. Louis); Martin Howell (Jennifer and their children, Martin Jr. and Kate, all of Gillette, N.J.), and Andrew Howell of Vail.
A memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Feb. 8 at the Edwards Interfaith Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial donations in memory of Barney may be made to the Shaw Regional Cancer Center (P.O. Box 1529, Vail, CO 81658) or to The Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration (P.O. Box 1000, Vail, CO 81658).
