Olympic gold medal swimmer coming to Edwards
April 3, 2013
Dogma Athletica is collaborating with the Sonnenalp on a two-day swim technique lecture and clinic taking place Friday and Saturday. Acclaimed swim coach and 2000 USA Olympic Gold Medalist Misty Hyman will lead a Friday evening swim technique lecture and Saturday morning swim clinic.
Hyman is best known for her upset win at the 2000 Olympics in the 200 meter butterfly in Sydney, Australia where she beat Australia’s Madame Butterfly, Susie O’Neil. Hyman is also known as a pioneer and specialist in the underwater dolphin kick. In addition, Hyman is also a 28-time All American at Stanford, 1998 NCAA Swimmer of the Year, Former World, American and Olympic record holder and 13 time National Champion. She’s has been coaching triathletes, open water swimmers and competitive swimmers for more than 10 years. Hyman has a fun and easy way of breaking down the complex math and science behind optimal swimming for swimmers of all levels. She also has a compelling and inspirational story about how she made it to the top of the medal podium in Sydney that will motivate and encourage all ages to follow their dreams in any arena.
Local athlete Josiah Middaugh was coached by Hyman last year to help him with the swim leg of the XTERRA offroad triathlon races he competed in.
“Last year I was at a loss as far as what to do with my swimming,” Middaugh said. “I lacked the swimming background growing up, but I had been seriously training my swimming for over 10 years with little progress in the last five years. Dogma helped line me up for coaching with Misty Hyman. She has a unique ability to break down the bio-mechanics of swimming and apply it to all levels of swimmers. She understands both the science of coaching and more importantly the art of coaching.”
After Hyman’s coaching, Middaugh’s times improved.
“In my first two XTERRAs last season I was 2:29 and 3:22 behind the lead swimmer,” Middaugh said. “In my next two XTERRAs, after only one weekend with Misty’s coaching, I was 1:33 and 1:01 off the lead. The results speak for themselves. I highly recommend you join me for this swim clinic if you are looking to improve in the water.”
