Disc golf Ace Race is Oct. 20

The Flying Eagle Disc Society is hosting a Discraft Ace Race at the Eagle County Fairgrounds in Eagle on Sunday, Oct. 20, but anyone who wants to play needs to register by Thursday, Oct. 3.

“Discraft designs a prototype disc every year for this event, which is held all over the country,” said FEDS President Steve Klehfoth.

Every person who registers gets two of the new Discraft prototype, which will be used exclusively for the competition.

“It’s a shortened layout of the normal course and you are only trying to hit aces,” Klehfoth said. “You don’t putt out or finish the round. It’s more just a fun event for us to end the season than a real tournament.”

Registration is $25 and must be made online at

A portion of the proceeds will go toward some upgrades at the fairgrounds disc golf course.

“We’ll be adding semi-permanent tee pads, new tee posts and refurbishing the baskets,” Klehfoth said. “We want to get back to where we used to be about 10 years ago, when events at the fairgrounds, such as the Eagle Open Tournament, had a statewide draw.”

Klehfoth said the fairgrounds course was created in the 1990s by a few dedicated individuals.

“There wasn’t an official club back then and the course went through some periods of extended neglect,” he said.

The FEDS formed in the winter of 2012 and had 50 members join that first year.

“That exceeded what we had hoped for and now we now have 80 members in our second year,” said Klehfoth. “We have members from all over Eagle, Summit and Garfield counties. They each have their own clubs but we have a broader sense of community and non-conflicting schedules. It’s nice to have other options to play with different people throughout the week.”

To join the Flying Eagle Disc Golf Society, sign up at or call Klehfoth at 608-695-0121. Annual membership is $20.
