Snowshoe event in Eagle to benefit those in need in Peru
February 3, 2014
EAGLE — Snowshoe enthusiasts of all ages and fitness levels are invited to participate in a 5K event downvalley on Saturday. Snowshoe for Peru 5K will be held at 10 a.m. at Sylvan Lake State Park to benefit Corazon de Esperanza, a nonprofit organization that provides hope to orphaned children, at-risk teens and impoverished women of Northern Peru.
President of the organization, Robyn Hanson, a teacher in the Eagle County school district, first visited Peru in 2006. Overwhelmed with the needs of the children and women, she later spent a year volunteering with an orphanage there and returned home to Gypsum after adopting five siblings from that orphanage. After returning, her passion for continuing to provide assistance to those in need in Peru grew.
HELPING CORAZON DE ESPERANZA
Hanson says that the snowshoe event proceeds will help support youth services, educational sponsorship, women's programs, short-term mission trips and the volunteer programs of Corazon de Esperanza.
"Our desire is to educate and provide resources so that the children and youth can become productive citizens," Hanson said. "We also help to train the women in sustainable vocations and programs."
Another ongoing project facilitated by the organization is Hogar Luz de Vida, a home for at risk teens. It is the first of its kind in Northern Peru to exclusively provide a home for older youth who have aged out of orphan care. The services provided include longterm self-sufficiency, to help youth make the difficult transition from orphanage care to independent living.
"We believe that these young people deserve to reside in a safe place and have the opportunity to attend college or vocational training," Hanson said.
Two of the home's floors have already been constructed, as fundraising continues to construct the third floor of the facility.
Registration for Snowshoe for Peru 5K is $25 in advance or $30 on race day. Participants may register online at http://www.corazon deesperanza.org.
