Police seek dogs stolen from animal shelter

To help

Anyone with information is being asked to call Eagle County Animal Services at 970-328-3647, or the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office at 970-328-8500.

EAGLE — Burglars broke into the Eagle County Animal Shelter and stole three dogs.

One the dogs was found in a shelter outside of the county, but authorities are looking for Coyote and Cash, who were stolen during what local authorities are calling the animal shelter’s first-ever break-in.

It happened during the night late Sunday or early Monday, according to the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office.

Animal shelter staffers arrived at 7:30 a.m. Monday and immediately saw that the three dogs were missing. They checked all over the shelter and the dogs were nowhere to be found.

All the doors to the kennels were locked. A chain link fence around the kennels had a hole cut in it perfectly, about a foot and a half in diameter, probably done with bolt cutters or a similar tool, according to the sheriff’s report.

The floor was soiled with dirt and mud tracks that appeared to come from a pair of boots.

The damage to the fence is more than $1,000, the report said.

The case remains under investigation and authorities are asking for help identifying suspects, and in locating the dogs.

Coyote is a 9-year-old neutered male Shepherd mix, and is microchipped. Coyote was surrendered Dec. 18.

Cash is a 2-year-old un-neutered malamute. Cash came to the shelter on Feb. 16 as a stray.
