On the Hill: Picnicking among the wildflowers in West Vail

On the Hill Summer, brought to you by The Steadman Clinic and the Steadman Philippon Research Institute, brings you a video report about a different High Country adventure every weekday.

Today's activity: High-alpine picnicking above West Vail.

Conditions: There's a red-flag (high fire danger) warning currently in effect for western Colorado and the Vail Valley due to the winds and dry conditions we've been receiving. While there's no outdoor burning restrictions in place in the Vail Valley, campers have been advised to avoid a campfire, if possible, so picnicking and packing dry items is probably a better choice over the next few days while it remains dry and windy. As usual, Vail has windy areas and not so windy areas, and the less windy areas always will be better for picnicking.

Today's weather: Sunny, with a high near 66. Breezy, with a southwest wind 15 to 20 mph. — National Weather Service
