EAGLE COUNTY — Kerry Donovan, a rancher, director of academics for Ski & Snowboard Club Vail and a member of the Vail Town Council, has announced her candidacy for the Colorado State Senate District 5. Democrat Sen. Gail Schwartz, who is faced with term limits, currently holds the seat.
Donovan’s family has a long history throughout the Western Slope. Donovan runs her family ranch, just up the road from Edwards. The Donovans have owned Copper Bar Ranch since the early 1980s, although the land’s history extends back to the Homestead Act. The Copper Bar Ranch is a modest operation that is focused on proven homesteading practices. Donovan raises Highland Cattle, has a number of garden plots that produce vegetables for area restaurants, a noisy flock of chickens as well as horses and mules and lastly, her dog, Lewis, rounds out the ranch.
“I was born and raised on the Western Slope, and I want to make sure we protect our rural values and way of life. No person or political party has a monopoly on good ideas,” she said. “And I am excited to meet with voters and constituents across the district to be a voice of reason for our families. I’m committed to protecting our land, water and natural resources.”
Donovan, who said she will file as a Democrat, has received support from community leaders throughout the seven counties encompassing Colorado State Senate District 5.
“Senate District 5 is going to be well represented by Kerry Donovan. Kerry represents important moderate values as an educator, rancher and community leader,” State Sen. Gail Schwartz said. “The seven counties of Senate District 5 have a strong rural voice in Kerry Donovan. I strongly endorse her and look forward to supporting her candidacy as she learns the issues important to voters in our district.”
Donovan said her parents raised her with a strong sense of community and value of service.
“They taught me that your actions better create a legacy worthy of your name,” she said. “I also am a problem solver. Be it building a fence through tough terrain or discussing issues around a coffee table, it can be bruising to find solutions, but I believe there is always a way through. We have to end the partisan bickering and do what’s best for the Western Slope.”
Colorado State Senate District 5 encompasses Chaffee, Delta, Eagle, Gunnison, Hinsdale, Lake and Pitkin counties.
