Eagle Valley basketball eliminated at districts

GRAND JUNCTION — It’s scary how quickly it ends.

Eagle Valley girls basketball’s dreams of state ended abruptly on Friday afternoon at the district tournament with a 59-47 loss to Durango at Palisade. Combined with a loss to Rifle on Thursday, and the Devils are done.

Durango led the Devils, 10-2, but Eagle Valley rallied to tie it at 19. The Demons, however, took a 30-21 lead at the half and never looked back.

“There were times we looked like the team we could be,” said Devils coach Sam Bartlett of the season. “But we struggled to find that consistency.”

Eagle Valley, which finishes the year at 12-10, showed flashes of brilliance at times this year. The Devils jumped all over teams like Grand Junction, Central and Steamboat Springs, scoring 20-plus points in a quarter.

On the other side of a coin, Eagle Valley couldn’t piece it together, especially at crucial moments late in the season.

While the ending is bitter now, the enduring memory of the season will likely be Megan Asmussen’s 3-pointer at the buzzer to beat Rifle two weeks ago during Senior Night.

“We had a lot of individual player development this year,” Bartlett said. “I saw girls do things they were not able to do before. We had some really terrific moments.”

Wrestlers struggle at state

Eagle County’s wrestlers got a rude welcome to the state tournament on Thursday and Friday.

All six lost their first-round matches with only Eagle Valley’s Xavier Mendoza at 220 pounds avoiding a pin. Mendoza, Raul Lopez and Ruben Chagoya, all of Eagle Valley, as were Battle Mountain’s Jesus Lopez and Alex Ramirez done after two bouts.

Only Eagle Valley freshman Noah Hermosillo (106 pounds) won a wrestle-back, beating Mesa Ridge’s Tyriq Jones before falling to Lewis-Palmer’s Alec Oberndorfer.
