Devils sweep league crowns

GRAND JUNCTION — Gypsum is officially the capital of 4A Western Slope track and field.

The Eagle Valley girls snapped Battle Mountain’s three-year run of league titles on Saturday, winning the league, 186.5-181.5, over the Huskies during this weekend’s league meet down in Grand Junction. Eagle Valley and Battle Mountain were tied coming into the final event, the 1,600-meter relay.

“It’s every coach’s dream,” Devils coach Jeff Shroll said.

At least, that’s what Shroll said afterward. A parent took a snapshot of the coach sitting alone in the bleachers biting his nails before the race.

Twice is Nice

But Carly Volkmer, Roxy Trotter, Charise Crabb and Lauren Thorpe won the race and there was rejoicing all around for the Devils.

And, oh, by the way, the Eagle Valley boys ran away with their second league crown in as many years with 182.5 points. Palisade was a distant second with 130.5.

So, this would be the first time Eagle Valley has won both league titles since Shroll started coaching in 1998.

“I’ve had the girls win and not the boys, and the boys and not the girls. This is an awesome feeling,” Shroll said. “I’m so proud of the kids and the coaching staff. It was an amazing weekend.”

The fun stat of the weekend is that the Eagle Valley boys and girls combined for seven wins in nine total relays. That’s taking teamwork to a new level.

Shroll described the girls’ meet as “a slugfest” between his Devils and Battle Mountain. The Huskies entered Saturday with a 31-point lead, primarily because Friday had a lot of finals in favorable events for them. This is the way it went all Saturday. The Devils ladies would take a lead after sprinting events, and then Battle Mountain would counter with their specialties.

Oh the Possibilities

Huskies coach Rob Parish pulled out all the stops, moving Val Constien to the two-mile. She had never run it before, but she did win.

“We had a very detailed sheet with all the possibilities,” Parish said. “I knew it was going to be really close.”

The Huskies had a setback when their medley team was disqualified. That said, the history of league meets is littered with episodes like these, and the Huskies kept rallying, nonetheless.

The Eagle Valley boys simply dominated. It was not only podium-topping performances, but depth.

“Just like last year, we got points from so many places,” Shroll said.

Now the task for both teams is to refuocus for state. By the time this hits the newsstands, co.milesplit.com will have closed. However lots of teams, including the Devils and Huskies will have to make decisions on where athletes will compete next week in Denver. For example, both Eagle Valley’s Riley Rowles and Battle Mountain’s Constien are qualified for more than four events at state, and they will withdraw from certain races. That happening all over the state will cause juggling in a lot of the state 18 races.

“Whoever has stock in milesplit should sell high tonight,” Parish said. “Every coach and athlete in the state is going hitting that thing.”
