Devils, Huskies solid at Mickey Dunn Invitational

GRAND JUNCTION — Eagle Valley track and field took top Eagle County honors at Saturday’s Mickey Dunn Invitational.

The Devils girls finished second, and the boys third. Palmer Ridge won both the boys and girls competitions.

“We have seen the enemy and they are fast,” joked Devils coach Jeff Shroll.

The usual people did the usual things for Eagle Valley in its opener. Carly Volkmer is still fast in the 400 meters. She won. Riley Rowles is still good at a lot of things, picking up points everywhere.

But it was the newbies that impressed. Taylor Hermosillo won the 800. She’s a sophomore. Cassie Jaramillo, a freshman, was third in the shot put. Junior John Davis leapt to third in the high jump.

Eagle Valley and Battle Mountain, for that matter, must be in some state of cosmic shock with the weather. This meet usually requires a heavy winter jacket.

“It plays a huge role in building the kids’ confidence,” Shroll said. “Of course, coming down to Grand Junction, it’s lower in altitude and warmer for us, so that bodes well.”

Battle Mountain’s girls were fourth, paced by wins from Izze Calabrese (300 hurdles), Rychelle Denardo (3,200) and the mile relay.

“Overall, the attitude has been really positive,” Husies coach Rob Parish said. “We’re doing lots of tinkering, and our athletes are OK with the plan. They understand that we are figuring out the pieces of the puzzle. I like that they’re not worried with about where the team places.”

Eagle Valley is at Cedaredge next week, while Battle Mountain is at Broomfield.

SOCCER

Huskies crush Delta

Battle Mountain soccer had no problem with Delta on Saturday in Edwards, logging a 9-0 win over the visiting Panthers.

The Huskies moved to 4-0 in the 4A Slope, one game ahead of Eagle Valley, Steamboat Springs and Palisade.

Battle Mountain is at Eagle Valley on Saturday.

Lacrosse

Huskies thump Fruita

Battle Mountain boys lacrosse is 4-0 after a 10-3 thumping of Fruita Monument on Saturday.

Cole Delain, Wyatt Dilling, Mac Kelsall and Clayden Davis did the damage on the offensive end, but the story was on the defensive side of things.

The Huskies allowed Fruita only two goals — Battle Mountain accidentally put one in on an own goal.

“Our stick positioning, defensive positions, our body position, it’s all an improvement on our team,” Huskies coach Jerry Nichols said. “We’re stepping up on team defense. The big guys are talking and (goalie) Max (Schramm) is quarterbacking them.”

The Huskies head over the pass to face Summit County on Wednesday. As such, there will be 3 feet of snow.

Baseball

Palisade sweeps Huskies

Battle Mountain baseball took its lumps in a league twinbill at Palisade, falling, 10-0 and 11-1, on Saturday in Grand Junction.

The Huskies will get back after it on Wednesday at Montrose.
