VMS lax beats Durango

EAST VAIL — There are two teams who play at historic Bandoni Alumni Field who are looking to play in the playoffs.

The question is, “Would VMS lacrosse wear orange?”

We’ll get there when we get there, but the Gore Rangers are 4-2 after a 13-8 win on Saturday over Durango, a team which made the playoffs last year.

What was a good portent on Saturday is that VMS was missing some key players.

Junior Nick Whiteford was out with a sore hamstring, so the Gore Rangers turned to another Whiteford, freshman Max. (Yes, they’re brothers.) Max had four goals.

“They both have long California blond flowing hair, so no one could tell whether it was Nick or Max,” VMS coach Matt Felser joked.

Clayton Kirwod, who knows a thing or two about scoring at the Bob, was skiing back east at a national competition, so in came Tyler Hancock, Trevor Shelden and Robby Gruber who were clutch.

On defense, Ben Barron was out, so up stepped freshman Marc Philippon.

“We really had a next-up attitude and everyone played a great game,” Felser said.

Some things stayed the same. Luke Verratti scored six times. Freshman Trace Landreth popped in two and Shleden added one from the middie corps.

VMS hosts Glenwood Springs on Wednesday and Steamboat Springs on Friday.

Huskies lacrosse splits

Battle Mountain boys lacrosse ended a tough, but competitive week, falling to defending state-champion Ponderosa, 10-7, on Saturday night in Edwards.

That loss comes on the heels of a 10-9 defeat at Valor Christian as Battle Mountain (5-2) spent the week playing some of the best that Colorado Class 4A can offer.

The Huskies will continue their foray outside the Mountain Conference, hosting Thompson Valley on Wednesday.

Battle Mountain girls lacrosse knocked off Overland, 15-5. The Huskies (5-3) host Grand Junction on Monday at 4 p.m.
