Vail Daily obituary: Peter Weitzman

Peter Aldwin Weitzman, known to many in the Vail Valley as the general manager of CubeSmart in Avon, passed away April 14. Though in the valley only three years as a full-time resident, Pete was passionate about mountain climbing in the Rockies for much of his adult life. He scaled many 14ers and planned to summit them all. He became an avid skier this winter, and he brought to skiing his athleticism and joy of the outdoors.

His greatest loves were his wife, Karema Lindsey-Weitzman, and his precious 2 1/2-year-old son, Ronen Weitzman. Pete was actively involved with his large, loving family — mothers Judith Finman and Milanie Hatfield; sisters Annie Weitzman Kandel and Minda Hatfield; and brothers Andrew Hatfield, Tony Hatfield and Zachary Hatfield.

He was the son of the late Arthur J. Weitzman and the late William Hatfield, and son-in-law of Rose and Arthur Arrington.

Pete had a zest for life, friendships and overcoming challenges. He achieved a lot in his 48 years. He grew up in Newton, Massachusetts, and attended public schools there as well as Roxbury Latin School. He graduated from Newton North High School, where he was a star running back on the football team.

Pete went on to receive honors and a Bachelor of Arts degree at Northeastern University, and then a Juris Doctor law degree at Washington Law School of American University. He passed the bar exam and was qualified to practice law in Maryland. He went on to an interesting career at Blue Cross in Jacksonville, Florida, before relocating to Colorado.

With his beautiful mind and outgoing personality, Pete made friends everywhere he lived. Always ready and eager to volunteer for good causes, he increased his circle of friends in many communities. He headed the United Way campaign at Blue Cross, and he gladly gave his time and effort to other community projects in Jacksonville, including efforts for the Jacksonville Public Library.

Since his recent unexpected death, friends as far back as middle school in Newton have posted Facebook messages of praise for Pete. His family, as well as friends, remember with affection his many good deeds and his love of life.
