Eagle Valley lacrosse victorious on Senior Day
GYPSUM — That’s the way to end a losing streak.
Eagle Valley lacrosse had lost 10 in a row, but righted the ship with an 11-2 thumping of Clear Creek on Senior Day in Gypsum.
“The main key was confidence,” Devils coach Brady Ecker said. “We came out stepping on the throttle and didn’t stop.”
Jared Salaz is not a senior, and that’s really good news. He had six goals. Quinn McCord, who is a senior, had a hat trick. Ben Zuckerman and scored a pair.
This was the final home game for seniors Joe Sheldon, Isiah Clark, Riley,Mehan, Brian Alt, Nick Mejia, Ben Witt, McCord, Mike Ramunno, Sammy Adams and Sam Boomhower.”

“Having 10 seniors was a big help,” said Ecker, who is in his first year at the helm of the program. “The made a lot of difference for us. We had really good leadership from the seniors.”
Eagle Valley (3-10) completes the regular season on Monday at Glenwood Springs.
TELLURIDE
VMS wins on road
The Vail Mountain School Road Warriors continue their fine work.
Yes, the school’s mascot is the Gore Rangers, but the lacrosse team was in Montrose on Friday, taking a W there. On Saturday, VMS headed to Telluride for a 15-4 victory over the Miners on Saturday.
And, next Friday, who knows where the team is going?
After a sluggish start on Friday, the Gore Rangers jumped all over the Miners early.
“They were great,” VMS coach Matt Felser said. “We stayed over at Montrose, had a great team dinner. Something clicked when we woke up and we came out fast.”
Luke Verratti, Nick Whiteford, Clay Kirwood, Trevor Shelden and Dylan Hardenbergh found the net at least twice. Tyler Hancock, Julian Nisonoff and Max Whiteford also ripped the twine and it was a jolly bus ride home.
Speaking of bus rides, VMS (9-3) has more in its future. The Gore Rangers will play at the fourth-place team of the Western Division of the Mountain Conference either on Friday or Saturday. And depending on action to come, that’s looking like Fruita Monument or Durango.
FARMER’S KORNER
Huskies set up Steamboat showdown
It didn’t snow?
That’s just wrong.
“Can you believe that,” Battle Mountain boys lacrosse coach Jerry Nichols said after the Huskies won 9-2 at Summit County on Saturday. “The forecast said it was going to snow at 9 a.m. and that was when our game was going to start. I ended up being a nice morning.”
Usually, ice skates are the standard footwear for a Battle Mountain at Summit lacrosse game, but go with it, fellas. Under sunny skies, the Huskies bounced back into the win column after a tough loss at Aspen.
Jack Nichols and Charlie Morrow both had hat tricks. Jeremy Sforzo, Clayton Davis and Max Brunette also scored.
As reflected by the scoresheet, the Huskies (10-3) got the midfield incorporated in more of the offense, a key as they head down the stretch.
The Huskies host Steamboat Springs on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. for Senior Night. Not only will there be the pomp and circumstance, but the winner of that game heads to Aspen for the league title game on Friday.
