Vail Mountain, Eagle Valley soccer record big wins

NEW CASTLE — We don’t want to alarm anyone, but the Vail Mountain School soccer team might be pretty decent.

The Gore Rangers went into Coal Ridge and came away with a 1-0 victory over the Titans.

That is Coal Ridge’s first loss on their home field since Sept. 8, 2011. Basalt nipped the Titans 1-0 that day. The bottom line is that it’s hard to win in Coal Ridge because the Titans have been darn good, so VMS walked away with three big points in the 3A Slope.

Pablo Aziz to Kevin Garcia started the scoring sequence. Garcia beat two defenders and slip the ball over to a streaking Eric Zdechlik who finished it during the 18th minute.

Colin Rouaud backstopped the win with key saves in goal for the Gore Rangers.

“It was a lot of fun out there,” VMS coach Pete Petrovski said. “The boys played really well from the start. The second half, we had a bunch more of opportunities. Their keeper made some great saves. They didn’t make it easy on us.”

It’s not meant to be easy, but VMS is looking sharp as it faces the last few weeks of its regular-season schedule. At 9-1 overall and 3-0 in the Slope, VMS continues its march with its league game against Aspen on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

Devils soccer into first place

Eagle Valley soccer is officially done with the preliminaries.

The Devils dusted Delta, 6-0, on Saturday. Aaron Ledezma had a hat trick, Paco Serna had two and Leonardo Rosales had the sixth.

Eagle Valley is 10-2 overall and 7-2 in the Slope. The Devils sit at 21 points in the 4A Slope, ahead of Battle Mountain (6-2, 18 points) and Steamboat Springs (6-1, 18 points).

The Devils are off until the week “that will define the whole story,” their coach Bratzo Horruitiner said rightly.

Steamboat comes to Gypsum on Oct. 13, followed by a trip to Battle Mountain on Oct. 15. In the meantime, the Devils get to rest and train.

“We have the mentality of improving is the goal,” Horruitiner said. “If we’re not improving, we’re just getting stuck. This is a great time to soak in how we’ve done, and prepare for two rivals we know how to play.”

Not only do the Devils have some time off, but they get to watch how the Huskies and Sailors play in the next 10 days or so. For starters, Battle Mountain is at Glenwood Springs on Tuesday, and the Devils will doubtless be cheering for the Demons.
