GYPSUM — Eagle Valley volleyball remains atop the 4A Slope standings after an emotional homecoming win, 25-23, 25-12, 25-12, against Glenwood Springs in Gypsum on Thursday night.

The thoughts and prayers of the Devils community are with the Brush Creek Elementary School first-grader who was injured during the homecoming parade on Wednesday.

“I think we all came together as a team, and we’re supporting each other,” Devils senior Carlee Morrison said.

There was a moment of silence and prayer before the game, and members of the Devils team went into the crowd to collect monetary donations to help with the family’s medical costs.

“What we’ve been through the past two years, we really know how to fight through those tough times and push through,” Devils coach Lindsey Myers said.

COMPETITIVE FIRST GAME

The Devils and Demons went back and forth in the first game. After the Demons tied it 23-23, the Devils rattled off the next two points. Morrison’s spike was blocked at the net, but senior Devon Green executed a perfect dig to set up Morrison one more time to seal the first game. Gaining redemption, Morrison slammed it to the floor for the winning point.

“I was just ready for the next one. I wanted to get it down.,” Morrison said. “When they block me, I’m determined to get the next one down.”

The second game went more as planned for the Devils. The front for Eagle Valley suffocated the Demons at the net with sophomore Becy Glutova, junior Kylie Martin and senior Haley Collier returning most of what the Demons sent over.

The spikes started falling in the second game, too, and the Demons had a difficult time getting their hands on Morrison’s slams over the net. Green did the job of a point guard on the court, keeping the Demons off guard by setting up Morrison, Glutova and Martin all around the floor throughout the night.

PLAYING IN THE RAFTERS

The Devils hustled, more than once, on balls deflecting off ceiling rafters and basketball hoops hanging in the gym. Early in the second game as the Demons were celebrating what appeared to be a point, the Devils were busy keeping their eyes on the ball bouncing in the rafters and getting it over the net successfully in three hits, which set up an eventual point for the Devils.

The Devils say they don’t practice that impromptu aspect of the game, but the mindset is “go for everything,” Morrison said.

LOOKING FORWARD

Eagle Valley (10-5 overall and 6-1 in league) is battling a close field in the 4A Slope, with Steamboat Springs and Battle Mountain also near the top of the board. (By the by, Steamboat beat the Huskies in three up north on Thursday night.) The Glenwood game marked the end of the first half of the season for the Devils.

“I think we could connect a little bit more and work on our serve-receive. And then get the ball down when we get perfect passes,” Green said looking to the second half of the season.

“Now, we’re going to see everyone again. So it’s our time to refine and come in strong the second half,” Myers said.

The Devils play next at Delta on Tuesday.
