Battle Mountain bounces back to beat Evergreen

EVERGREEN — As Scarlett O’Hara reminded moviegoers that “tomorrow is another day,” so it was for Battle Mountain soccer.

After a devastating 3-0 defeat to Steamboat Springs on Tuesday at home, tomorrow came on Wednesday as the Huskies bounced back in a big way with a 2-1 win at Evergreen.

Whatever frustrations Battle Mountain has had with the Sailors, this win says that this crew can play. The Cougars entered the game at 9-4 and are tied for second place in the Jeffco League.

“They were devastated last night and did a good job of holding it together and not letting it carry over,” Huskies coach David Cope said. “Teenagers can be like the stock market. They can react too positively or too negatively. Good athletes have short-term memories.”

Evergreen came out blazing on its Senior Night. Goalie Nicole Lasater kept the Huskies in it early. Against the flow of play, the Huskies got a corner kick in the 21st minute. Mallory Skidmore sent it in, and A.J. Davies had a header attempt. Avery Weaver got the rebound and sent it to Abby Carlson for the goal.

That gave Battle Mountain the momentum. Late in the first half, Audrey Teague set up Emily Cope for a strike and a 2-0 lead.

“It’s definitely nice to come together as a team with such a big win,” Teague said. “Everyone was fighting for the seniors and it was a great win.”

And with that goal, Cope notched the 40th goal of her career, making her the first Battle Mountain soccer player with 40 goals and 40 assists.

The Huskies (11-3) wrap their season at Palisade on Thursday.

VMS falls at Coal Ridge

SILT — Continuing the “Gone with the Wind” theme, Vail Mountain School soccer lost in overtime at Coal Ridge, 3-2, on Tuesday afternoon.

Now, everybody chime in, “Frankly my dear I/we don’t give a damn.”

The reason the Gore Rangers don’t give a hoot is that they got a good game against the Titans. When Coal Ridge led 1-0 at the half, it was the first time Vail Mountain School trailed this season after 40 minutes.

And the Gore Rangers responded nicely with two goals from Tess Johnson.

The Titans got the equalizer in stoppage time and won via golden goal.

“It was a nice response from the team,” Vail Mountain School coach Sylvan Ellefson said. “It was nice to have an opponent pressure us. We got a positive response from the team after the game when it comes to the rest of the season.

Vail Mountain School head coach Bob Bandoni was unavailable for comment because he was so distraught by Sen. Ted Cruz’s departure from the GOP presidential race.

The Gore Rangers (10-1) return to Eagle County on Thursday for a match at Vail Christian.
