EDWARDS — So, if you were outside at the Battle Mountain soccer game Thursday night, thinking that the volleyball game in the gym was drier, not so fast.
Battle Mountain’s gym sprung a leak, moving the volleyball team’s match against Summit County into the auxiliary gym. The Huskies overcame the water and the Tigers for a 25-17, 25-14, 25-17 win to open the 4A Slope 1-0.
“Everyone was a good sport about the leak,” Huskies coach Jason Fitzgerald said. “The atmosphere was equal to a state-championship match in that tiny gym. It was awesome.”
Under the category of awesome, according to the coach, was the Huskies’ defense. That set up Tesha Olson at middle block and outside-hitters LaRose Currie and Mackenzie Ellison up for big nights.
Battle Mountain had 33 kills in all and had no hitting errors in Game 2.
All this leads up to a big match today at Palisade at 1 p.m. The Bulldogs are the two-time defending Slope champions and have been a major thorn in the side of the Huskies.
Devils sweep Demons
Eagle Valley volleyball is 2-0 in the 4A Slope after a 25-15, 25-13, 25-19 sweep of Glenwood Springs. And for some reason, the Devils’ gym did not spring a leak.
Setters Megan Asmussen had the attack humming with 39 assists. Lacey Gerard put down 10 kills, while Tiffany Sheehy had eight. The Devils are 2-1 after the season-opening loss to Montrose.
“I felt fortunate to have that Montrose match early before we started league,” first-year Devils coach Garrett La Force said. “We were able to reflect on what we did. What’s really big is that our first two league games have been in our gym. We’ve gotten a lot of support from our student body and fans.”
Eagle Valley is at Summit County on Thursday.
Saints topple Hotchkiss
Thursday was winning day for local volleyball teams.
Vail Christian hit the road and took out Hotchkiss, 25-19, 22-25, 25-6, 26-16.
Celia Smith led the way with 15 kills and seven aces, both team highs. Kristen Currey and Taylor Alexander each smashed seven kills. Setter Remy Beveridge had 22 helpers.
The win evens up Vail Christian’s 2A Slope record at 1-1 after a loss to Meeker last weekend. The Saints host Rangely today at 1 p.m. at the Wheeler Events Center in Edwards.
