Devils volleyball outlasts Demons

GLENWOOD SPRINGS — Welcome to being the hunted.

Eagle Valley volleyball continued to put some space between itself and the middle of the pack of the 4A Slope with a 25-19, 22-25, 6-25, 25-23, 15-10 win at Glenwood Springs on Thursday night.

“We knew Glenwood wanted to move into second place (in the league),” Devils coach Garret La Force said. “They knew the No. 2 spot went through us. We went in with the mentality that they would come out strong, and they did.”

The Devils (7-3 overall and 6-2 in the Slope) weathered the storm and still hold second place in the league.

Thursday’s game started with passing and Jaimee and Ashley Newborn playing well at middle-blocker. That eventually opened up the outside. This is all part of the necessary adjustments when going through the league a second time.

“There are adjustments before the game. There are adjustments during the game,” La Force said. “We were able to study the film from the last game with them, and they obviously did, too. They countered well in Games 2 and 3.”

This is a way of saying that Eagle Valley expects more of the same as the second half continues.

Eagle Valley is at Delta on Saturday.

Summit soccer tops Devils

FARMER’S KORNER — Summit County soccer has seen enough of Eagle Valley.

The Devils handed the Tigers their only blemish on their league mark to date, a tie, early this season. Thursday night, the Tigers were able to hold off Eagle Valley, 4-3, in the rematch.

The Tigers held a 4-0 lead at halftime, before the Devils nearly stormed all the way back behind goals from Aldo Palacios, Alan Caraveo, and Aaron Ledezma.

“We gave them a run for their money,” Eagle Valley coach Bratzo Horruitiner said. “We were on top of them for the final 20 minutes. Our kids could have given up and lost, 8-0. We’re playing better. We battled.”

Eagle Valley (2-6-2 overall and 2-5-2 overall) hosts Rifle at Hot Stuff Stadium on Saturday for Homecoming at 1 p.m.
