Saints beat Hayden ... finally

EDWARDS — Down goes Hayden. Down goes Hayden.

If you’ve watched Vail Christian boys basketball long enough, well, such a happenstance deserves a Howard Cosell call.

The Saints snapped an 0-for-the-program streak against the Tigers on Friday night with a 58-49 victory against Hayden in Edwards.

“We got one last year when we beat Meeker,” Saints coach Sheldon Kuhns said. “We had never beaten them, and that started a 10-game winning streak that put us in the Final Four. Getting Hayden feels good.”

There is no truth to the rumor that the winner of this annual basketball game will get The Will Parker Nose Guard Trophy.

As Kuhns was talking, assistant coach Todd Ellsworth jokingly said, “U-G-L-Y. You ain’t got no alibi.” Nothing gets by Ellsworth — any of them. It wasn’t the prettiest of wins, but in conference play, where everyone knows everyone, that will happen. Hayden scouted the Saints well and forced them to adjust on the fly.

“I told them, ‘A sign of a good team is, even when you don’t play your sharpest, you still are good enough to pull one out,’” Kuhns said “We didn’t rebound the ball as well as we can tonight.”

But 21 points from Parker Poage, 14 from Ethan Ellsworth, eight from Cooper Gould and some clutch free throws from Alex Davis did the trick. The Saints are 8-1 overall and 2-0 in the 2A Slope.

The boys head to Sargent today for a nonconference tilt.

Slow start sinks Saints

Vail Christian girls basketball scored just 11 points in the first half in a 43-38 loss to Hayden on Friday night.

“We definitely picked it up in the second half,” Saints coach Doug Bruce said. “We definitely picked up the pressure defensively, forcing them to turn the ball over. We converted some of them, but we got in a hurry on others, and didn’t convert. I guess, the moral of the story is that you can’t dig yourself in that big of a hole.”

Remy Beveridge led Vail Christian with 11 points.

The Saints girls are at Gilpin County today.
