Climbing team rocks at regionals in Boulder
May 19, 2013
VAIL— Local climbers from the Vail Athletic Club Climbing Team travelled to Boulder last weekend to compete in the USA Climbing SCS Regional Championships.
This competitive climbing series has young athletes climbing while using a rope for protection, either on top rope or lead climbing for the older competitors.
Local athletes from the VAC team included Berit Kirchner, Jessie Hawkins, Ethan Pitcher, Amalia Manning, Oliver Chantler, Benji Dantas, Lukas Bergsten and Brody Nielsen.
Manning, Pitcher and Dantas all qualified to advance to the divisional championships in Salt Lake City in June.
The VAC Climbing Team is hosting its summer Open House Sunday. This is an opportunity for young athletes to experience climbing and learn more about the team.
The goal of the program is to introduce and refine proper climbing technique to kids, maintain a strong emphasis on all aspects of climbing safety, and promote a positive team environment. Children ages 5 to 18 are eligible to participate and no equipment or experience is necessary.
The team will practice both indoors and outdoors throughout the summer, taking the teaching environment to the real rock.
In addition, there are three camping and climbing trips planned for the team families to get out and experience rock climbing together. For more information contact regarding climbing at the Vail Athletic Club or the children's program, please call Larry Moore at 970-477-3239.
