Devils have four in regional semis

MONTROSE – Eagle Valley wrestling’s big boys are coming through so far.
The Devils have four wrestlers into the semifinals of the Region 4 Wrestling Tournament Friday in Montrose, and they are the usual suspects.
Andy Armstrong, the top seed at 220, got a bye and then needed all of 58 seconds to dispatch Delta’s Lino Ortiz. Armstrong will face Palisade’s Armando Cabriales in the semifinals.
At 182, Ty LaFramboise is also the top seed. He got his bye and then took out Thompson Valley’s David Eusea, 8-3. Rifle’s Clayton Coombs is LaFramboise’s opponent in the semis.
Joey Sanchez is rolling along at 195. He pinned Sierra’s Seth DeAlba in 2:49, and then knocked off Delta’s Kyle Collins, 4-1. Sanchez’s semi should be a good one. He’s the No. 3-seed in his bracket and taking on Falcon’s Charlie Wallace, the No. 2.
Cole Nielsen is putting his opponents on the mat at 170 pounds. He knocked off Montrose’s Royal Haulman in 55 seconds and scored a minor upset of Rifle’s Antonio Galaviz with a pin in 3:39. Nielsen takes on Falcon’s Justin Barron.
The semifinals, and, hopefully, finals are today (Saturday). Though the top-four wrestlers at each weight punch their ticket to state, Eagle Valley’s quartet is not yet assured of a trip to Denver. Wrestlers who finish fourth and have not faced someone on the consolation side of the bracket must compete in a wrestle-back.
That said, Armstrong, LaFramboise, Sanchez and Nielsen are exactly where they want to be.
Eagle Valley’s Jay Bullock (103), Chris Comroe (126), Rafael Gurule (132), Davey Madrid (145), Andrew Vigil (152), Devin Ward (160) and Xavier Mendoza (285) are all still alive on the consolation side of the bracket.
The Devils are fifth as a team out of 17 with 54 points behind Thompson Valley (111.5), Pueblo Centennial (86.5), Montrose (76) and Palisade (59).
