Eagle Valley football crushes Arvada, 62-14

ARVADA — “How were we going to react?”

That was the question Eagle Valley football coach John Ramunno posed to his team after a disheartening 34-14 loss to Delta last week.

The answer ended up being beating the holy heck out of Arvada, 62-14, Thursday night down on the Front Range.

“More than anything, I don’t think the kids played up to their potential against Delta,” Ramunno said. “I can say we have a pretty good little team with character. We showed up here and went to work.”

A week after giving up some big plays, the Devils (3-1) made them.

Eagle Valley had two pick-sixes (Riley Rowles and Cristian Aguilar) and also recovered a fumble. The Devils’ offense, meanwhile, did not commit a turnover, and plus-three in that category is always a good thing.

And Eagle Valley’s offense did pretty much whatever it wanted. Rowles had a short, but efficient night of running the ball. He had nine carries for 120 yards and three trips to the house. Quarterback Orin Reichardt picked up 73 yards on just nine touches and also had two touchdowns. Victor Avila had a solid night with five carries for 45 yards and a score.

And junior Mike Ramunno got in on the action with a 46-yard score on a slick pitch from backup quarterback Harrison Stevens.

It was 28-0 at the end of the first quarter and coach John Ramunno started playing anyone and everyone.

3A Slope competition

After the Delta game, Thursday was also a solid reminder of how tough the upper echelon of the 3A Slope is.

“The biggest thing is to stay healthy and competitive,” Ramunno said. “Hopefully, we’ll be there in the end. The kids take pride in playing physical football, and Palisade, Rifle and Delta are physical teams.”

Next up is a road trip to Moffat County. In a sign of the coming apocalypse, the Bulldogs are running a spread offense. For those not familiar with the league, Moffat has traditionally been a quintessential three-yards-and-a-cloud of dust team.

On a serious note, the Devils will be facing spread offenses the next two weeks in Moffat and then Glenwood Springs for Homecoming.
