GYPSUM — Well, well, well.

Guess who won Synergy Bowl I?

Eagle Valley soccer knocked off the Vail Mountain School, 5-1, on Saturday at John Ramunno Field in Gypsum.

Spectacular week

That caps a spectacular week for the Devils with two conference wins, three in total and a general leg up on Eagle County bragging rights.

Probably the most impressive aspect for Eagle Valley (4-2) is that the victory over VMS came on the heels of an emotionally- and physically-taxing victory at Battle Mountain on Friday night.

“They’re finally understanding what they need to do to achieve the goals we’ve set for the season, and to watch them fulfill that is inspiring,” Devils coach Maggie Sherman said.

Sofia Aguilar scored twice, and Kaitlyn Borah, Jessica Adams and Uma Nanin all scored for the Devils. Anwyn Urquhart had VMS’ goal. And, let it be noted, that Rose Sandell got the win in net for Eagle Valley, as regular starting goalie Brennecke Gale was serving her red-card suspension for a hand ball outside of the 18 against Battle Mountain.

Meanwhile, the loss for VMS (3-1) is not the end of the world. The Gore Rangers, who have moved up to 3A this season, scheduled this game and others against bigger schools — 4A Battle Mountain, Mullen and Summit County are also on the nonconference slate — for a reason. They want to see a faster pace of competition.

‘well-coached team’

“I think we saw a well-coached aggressive team,” said Bob Bandoni, who coached Sherman back when she attended VMS. “They were well-organized in the field, and it remains a great opportunity for us. There’s so much to learn from it. I think Maggie doing a great job there. You could see (Eagle Valley) playing one, two passes ahead of the game.”

Both team have big weeks ahead. VMS returns to conference play on Tuesday at Rangely and hosts the Colorado Rocky Mountain School on Thursday. Eagle Valley hosts Coal Ridge on Thursday at 6 p.m., followed by Steamboat Springs on Saturday.
