Eagle Valley school records fall on Day 2 of state meet

Special to the Daily

DENVER — Eagle Valley track and field continued its parade to the podium on Day 2 of the 4A state meet at Jeffco Stadium.

Leading the way was the girls medley team. Kenzie Sisson, Megan Asmussen, Carly Volkmer and Roxy Trotter put up a time of 1 minute, 49.48 seconds. That’s a new school record, which this quartet seems intent on regularly breaking. It’s also the sixth-fastest time in 4A.

These ladies weren’t done. They were also ninth (1:47.35) in the 800 relay. Trotter made it 3-for-3 on trips to the podium. She finished ninth in the 800 (2:16.70). By the by, 2:16.70 is a time which probably deserved better than ninth. This is just one of the years when the 4A 800 field is deep. Trotter ran a 2:18 last year and finished eighth.

The Eagle Valley 1,600 relay of Trotter, Volkmer, Haley Collier and Victoria Schwaiger advanced from preliminaries Friday to today’s final. The quartet busted their own school record with a 4:05.34

There was a little heartbreak for the boys 1,600 relay. Dominic Patterson, Christian Aguilar, Luis Chavez and Zeke Sandoval ran a 3:25, their best time of the season, finishing 10th, one spot out of the finals.

In the boys 400 relay, Brandon Walker, Nick Ross, Thomas Mills and Sandoval put up a 43.27, also a season best and finished 13th. The girls 400 of Michelle Carbajal, Sisson, Megan Osteen and Asmussen clocked a 51.52, taking 18th.

“The thing I’m proud of, whether we make the finals or not, is that we didn’t come to watch. We came to compete. We’re breaking school records or running the best times of the season. They’re competing with everybody.”

Huskies

OK, the 300 hurdles hasn’t been a big event at Battle Mountain.

It is now.

Sophomore Lilly McMurrain put up the third-fastest time in qualifying in the 300 with a 45.58. Sofia Calabrese was sixth in 47.12. The Huskies will have two in today’s finals — Isabelle Calabrese ran a 48.24, but did not make the cut.

“I described Lilly’s time earlier as a video-game time,” Huskies coach Rob Parish said. “Lilly’s coming on like a freight train.”

Mandy Ortiz took seventh in the 3,200 finals. She ran an 11:36. Val Constien was 11th in the 800 with a 2:18.09. Again to the depth of the 800 field, she had a 2:18.26 last year at this meet, and finished fourth.

The 1,600 relay was fourth in qualifying with a new school record of 4:01.06. Those fine individuals are Katia Lopez, Sofia Calabrese, Constien and McMurrain.

“Our kids are performing well,” Parish said. “Coming down and spending all that time at big meets (during the regular season) has conditioned them to compete with the best.”

Saints

Quietly, very quietly, the Vail Christian girls are in the hunt for a state title. After Day 2 of the 1A meet, Shining Mountain Waldorf leads the pack with 40 points. The Saints are in second with 35 with nine events, roughly the halfway point, completed.

The ladies have some major scoring opportunities in the 400 relay and the open 100 and 200 today. Stay tuned.

The girls 800 relay added to the points with a third-place finish. That’s Coco Spangler, Kristen Currey, Bella McCormick and Celia Smith.

Speaking of Smith, the junior now has three state medals this year. After silver Thursday in the pole vault and her leg in the 800, she also was third in the high jump at 4 feet, 10 inches. Currey took seventh at 4-6.

The boys also made a splash Friday. The 800 relay of Cole Caynoski, Mason Daniels, Jordan Mesch and Gunnar Hamina finished second in 1:35.01. Ethan Pence was also in the points in the 800 with eighth place.
