Eagle Valley soccer and volleyball pick up wins

GYPSUM — Yes, it’s been a rollercoaster at times this year for Eagle Valley soccer, but the important thing to remember is that the Devils still control their destiny.

Eagle Valley edged Glenwood Springs, 2-1, setting up a huge showdown at Battle Mountain on Thursday at 6 p.m.

“It’s a tough schedule. We’ve had a lot of injuries and a lot of sick kids,” Devils coach Bratzo Horruitiner said. “It can be a scary game, but we’re also learning the peace of controlling a tight results. We’re moving the ball. We continue to attack and not make mistakes.”

What the coach left out is that the Devils also game back from a 1-0 deficit. Juan Garduno to Alex Torres was the equalizer. Carlos Chavez got the game winner in the second half.

And so it’s time for Round 2 with Battle Mountain. As any Devils fan will tell you, Eagle Valley won Round 1, 2-1, in overtime. Battle Mountain moved to 7-1 in the Slope on Tuesday with a 7-4 win at Summit County. The Devils are 6-2 in the league. If the Devils win, then not only do they pull into first place, but would own the tiebreaker over the Huskies.

“I feel like our kids know how to play the game,” Horruitiner said. “We’re a smart team. We need to play the game as we know it, play to our strengths.”

Devils sweep Saints

Eagle Valley rolled to a 25-8, 25-9, 25-12 at Vail Christian on Tuesday night.

If you’re counting at home, then the Devils are 12-2.

Junior Teaghan Mercer got a bunch of playing time, including taking a turn in the back row, unusual for a middle blocker. Ellie Lubbers also got her turn at outside hitter.

The Devils have the week off before hosting Glenwood Springs on Tuesday and heading to Palisade a week from Friday.

Huskies top Vail Mountain School

Battle Mountain won bragging rights … temporarily … over the Vail Mountain School with a 25-15, 23-25, 25-17, 25-19 win over the Gore Rangers.

We say temporarily as the two teams could see each other again on Saturday at the Queen of the Mountain tournament in Edwards.

“It was a good experience all the way around,” Huskies coach Jason Fitzgerald said. “We still struggled to clean up our unforced errors. It’s high school volleyball. As a program and as a team, we’re focusing on resetting ourselves for the last run of matches.”

Along those line, the Huskies (5-4) head to Glenwood Springs on Thursday. VMS (7-3) is next in action at Saturday’s tourney.
