Gore Rangers defeat Vail Christian
April 17, 2014
EDWARDS — Stipulated, Vail Mountain School soccer has played only four games this season, including a 4-0 league win at Vail Christian in Edwards on Wednesday, but it's already playoff push time.
This, in a nutshell, is the joy of spring sports.
The Gore Rangers (2-2 in the 3A Slope) play six league games in the next two weeks.
VMS is in fifth place in a league that takes four teams to the postseason. Coal Ridge, Grand Valley, Basalt and Aspen hold down those spots.
The Gore Rangers have Basalt at home on Saturday, followed by a game at Grand Valley on Tuesday, so nothing's locked in stone. (And, astute VMS fans will note that the Gore Rangers have beaten Aspen, so they hold the tiebreaker over the Skiers if it comes to that.)
"This week should be fun," VMS coach Ted O'Reilly said.
Vosslers traditionally stop goals at VMS and Battle Mountain. At least Nick did. But, Kristen Vossler scored twice against the Saints, while Taylor Washing and Haley Samuels scored goals in the win.
What's more interesting is that VMS hadn't played a game in 16 days, and had already established itself as a slow starter in its earlier in the season. Yet, the Gore Rangers came out firing.
"They actually played their best soccer during the first 10 minutes of the game," O'Reilly said. "They seemed pretty focused."
Bevy of Injuries
Vail Christian is struggling with a bevy of injuries. Both Canyon Baker and Julia Vlaar tore their ACLs during the past two weeks. Both had surgery on Tuesday and are recuperating at the Baker household, administered to by the matron of the maison, Kristen Baker, who wanted to thank the Saints community for all its support.
"These injuries are a total bummer," Vail Christian coach Lauren Mutter said. "They're both great athletes. However, we're full of go-getters and players who really enjoy soccer. They just wanted to play for Canyon and Julia."
Vail Christian also has Basalt next on Tuesday.
