Huskies fall short to Delta in solid effort
January 25, 2014
EDWARDS — So close.
Battle Mountain girls basketball put together one of its best efforts of the season in a 51-48 loss against Delta on Saturday in Edwards.
As has been the case throughout the season, the biggest factor for the Huskies was watching the recording of their game on Tuesday, a loss at Meeker.
"We showed the girls the little things," Battle Mountain coach Vinny Cisneros said. "It was stuff like creating contact and being a more physical team. The team did that today. (Delta) tried to press us, and, for a few possessions, we showed a little lack of composure. As the game went on, we had stronger passes and attacked."
Elizabeth Olivas had 17 points, while Taylor Davidson toted up 12. Aileen Arreola chipped in nine.
Meanwhile, the Battle Mountain boys dropped a 55-37 decision to the visiting Panthers.
Battle Mountain's teams face Summit County on Tuesday. The girls head over the pass, while the boys are in Edwards.
Saints fall at Sargent
Vail Christian boys basketball's rematch with Sargent on Saturday did not go as planned. The host Farmers beat the Saints, 41-27.
The two teams had met in the first-round of the state football playoffs in November.
"No excuses. There never are excuses," Saints coach Sheldon Kuhns said. "We were pretty gassed. We played good defense. We had one of those nights where we couldn't throw a ball in the ocean."
Kuhns went on to say that this game had no consequences with regard to the 2A Slope or to district seeding. This was Vail Christian's third game in four days, and the Saints had invested a lot in league wins over Soroco and Hayden.
The Ethans led the scoring for Vail Christian (8-2). Ellsworth had 10 and Pence had eight.
Vail Christian hits the road again for league game at DeBeque on Tuesday.
Huskies hockey loses
Battle Mountain hockey had a tough weekend, falling to Steamboat Springs, 3-1, on Friday and at Cherry Creek, 6-0, on Saturday.
Hunter Henderson had the lone score for the Huskies (5-5-2).
Battle Mountain is at Resurrection Christian on Thursday.
