Huskies spikers sweep Vail Mountain School
September 25, 2013
EDWARDS — And that would be six in a row.
Battle Mountain volleyball made it so Tuesday night with a 25-17, 25-8, 25-17 victory over local rival Vail Mountain School in Edwards. But, please hold off on the party hats.
“It’s still a little early to get excited,” Huskies coach Jason Fitzgerald said. “We hit the halfway mark in October. Then, I’ll let you know if we get excited.”
He’s not being a party-pooper, just adding some coach-like perspective. On the other hand, 6-1 is the team’s best start since 2007, the last time the Huskies went to state, which might be a reason why the Battle Mountain faithful are getting excited.
Fitzgerald joked that a get-together with the Gore Rangers is “a family game.” It’s not so much of a joke because all these young ladies do play club ball together. Battle Mountain got to play its whole roster. That enabled senior Carly Cook to record career highs in assists and aces. Junior Taylor Anderson got her first look at the libero position and performed well. Also, Sofia Calabrese got back into the flow of things after a week’s absence.
Next up is the homecoming game against Delta today at 6:30 p.m. While homecoming can be a distraction, Fitzgerald is dangling a carrot in front of the Huskies.
“For us, this is going to be a fairly easy match to focus on,” he said. “The three years I have been here, we have never beaten Delta.”
Vail Mountain (2-4) heads to Hotchkiss on Saturday.
