Saints rip Rangely
February 9, 2013
EDWARDS – Well, that was a good weekend.
After picking up its first win against Meeker Friday, and on the road no less, Vail Christian boys basketball toppled Rangely, 62-48, Saturday afternoon at the Wheeler Athletic Center in Edwards.
That puts the 1A Saints in second place in the 2A Slope with a record of 6-2 in the league and 11-4 overall.
“We’re cautiously optimistic,” Saints coach Sheldon Kuhns said, not wishing to invoke the wrath of whatever power may control sports karma.
Kuhns and anyone in blue, silver and white would be doing cartwheels if this were to happen two weeks from now at the 1A district tournament. But the Saints are showing the key ingredients for a successful district weekend with their defense and rebounding.
“We’ve played really well defensively on back-to-back nights,” Kuhns said. “We’re developing a half-court man-to-man defensive identity.”
Kevin Boselli wrapped a great weekend with 18 points against Rangely. Gunnar Wilson racked up 13 points and also led the team in rebounding against the Panthers. Zach Linder came up big in the paint with 12 points.
While a 6-2 record in the 2A Slope is impressive for the Saints, it’s their play against 1A teams in the league (North Park, DeBeque and Plateau Valley) that count toward district seeding. With that in mind, that makes Friday night’s game at North Park a big one.
“We need to take care of business,” Kuhns said. “A win guarantees us the No. 1 seed at districts, and that’s step No. 1.”
