COLBRAN – Happy 100th, Vail Christian boys basketball.
The Saints knocked off Plateau Valley, 64-60, Saturday afternoon in Colbran for the 100th win in the program’s history.
“I think it’s cool the school has won 100,” Saints coach Sheldon Kuhns said. “That’s pretty neat. We’ve won seven games this year. It took us until our fourth season to win No. 7 overall.”
He won’t say it, so we will. Congratulations to Kuhns, who has coached the Saints since their inception, including those very lean early years.
Congratulations also to Gunnar Wilson, who had a career-high 23 points Saturday against the Cowboys. Robby Bowles had 16. Meanwhile, Kevin Boselli and Nigel Johnsen were the heroes on the free-throw line, going a combined 4-for-4 in the final minute.
The Saints (7-2) will host Plateau Valley in February in what will be the league game between the two schools. Saturday’s victory, however, was critical toward district seeding. Please remember that the Saints, Plateau Valley and DeBeque all drop to 1A come the postseason.
Vail Christian, which has never gotten past the second round of the district tournament, desperately wants the top seed to avoid future postseason nightmares.
“We’re getting ahead of the eight-ball in district seeding,” Kuhns said. “We’ve lost to Norwood by two (points) last year and Ouray by three two years ago (in the second round) because we didn’t get that top seed. It was also nice that we were able to win today without our best performance.”
