Saturday’s preps wrap: Devils baseball, VMS lax and track teams searching for sun

GYPSUM — It wasn’t a beautiful day, but Eagle Valley baseball played two — and, more importantly won two against Rifle, 4-3, and 8-7.

Garrett Martin got off to a shaky start on the mound in the opener, but settled in and also helped his cause by hitting a home run. The Devils used some small ball to tie the game at three in the sixth.

In the seventh inning, Eagle Valley loaded the sacks, and Kyle Farris played walkoff with a single.

In the nightcap, Joe Rivera III was the star on the mound and at the play. But it was also a small, but important play that got the Devils going. The don’t-forget-it moment was a bunt by Jay Cosstte. That moved runners into scoring position and Mathew Sanchez drove them home as the Devils swept the Bears.

Eagle Valley is 9-9 overall and 6-5 in the 4A Slope. As is the case this time of year, all eyes are on the rating-percentage index, which had the Devils on the outside, looking in before the Rifle twinbill.

The Devils close the regular season against Glenwood Springs on Wednesday, and hope the RPI appreciates their efforts.

Vail Mountain School lax cruises

Vail Mountain School lacrosse turned it up to 11, by beating Eagle Valley 16-3, on Saturday.

VMS is 11-1, heading into the final week of the regular season. The Gore Rangers face Littleton on Tuesday and then play Steamboat Springs on Friday and Saturday. That’s at Steamboat and then Game No. 2 in East Vail.

“I think Steamboat’s going to be big, but we’re still focusing on Littleton,” VMS coach Bobby Ecker said. “It’s one game at a time.”

Luke Verratti, Shane Cole, Todger Davis, Kyle Negomir, Griffin O’Connell and Tyler Hancock were among the scorers for VMS.

Eagle Valley (4-8) is at Evergreen on Monday.

Track and field

Could we please find some good weather?

Apparently not.

Eagle Valley was at the Montrose invitational on Friday, which was a good day for Joslin Blair. Yes, she placed in a bunch of events. She was also selected to the U.S.A. Youth Mountain Running Team. Blair will compete in Gagliano del Capo, Italy, on June 24 against an international field.

Meanwhile, Battle Mountain tried to enter four different track meets and only ended up in two. Weather postponed the team’s home meet as well as the Liberty Bell on the Front Range. The Huskies ended up at the Grand Junction Central Warrior Invitational, as well as sending some athletes to the Clint Wells Invitational in Craig.

The Huskies’ Lizzie Harding was the star of the weekend, setting the new school record in 3,200 meters by 10 seconds.

In theory, both teams will be at the Western Slope League Meet next weekend in what will hopefully be sunny Grand Junction.
