June 28, 2013
BEAVER CREEK — World champion Mikaela Shiffrin paid a visit to the 2015 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships Organizing Committee meeting on Thursday to provide an insider's perspective on what makes for a great World Championships experience for the athletes.
The 18-year-old Eagle-Vail resident touched on various items, including athlete transportation, training and warm-up areas, Opening Ceremonies participation and the post-race gauntlet of interviews, medals and parties.
Approximately 50 members of Vail and Beaver Creek's 2015 World Championships Organizing Committee were on hand for the bi-annual meeting, with the majority of the 21 operational committees also providing progress reports and updates on a wide variety of Championships' activities.
Prior to leaving the meeting to attend a German class, Shiffrin passed along one final message to the group.
"We're all really excited to be here," she said. "I've talked to a lot of other athletes and everyone loves coming here. I know this event is a huge undertaking for everyone, but we're all very excited and I wanted you all to know that."
Shiffrin drove to the meeting in her new bright red loaner Audi RS5, although her mother, Eileen, had commandeered the car during the meeting to "run some errands". She won the use of the Audi at a post-race drawing for prizes at the World Cup Finals in Lenzerheide, Switzerland.
Scheduled from Feb. 2-15, 2015, the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in Vail and Beaver Creek are expected to showcase athletes from over 70 nations with an estimated 750 million worldwide television viewers and an on-site media and broadcast entourage of approximately 1,500 members.
