Rockslide closes Highway 24 between Minturn, Leadville

MINTURN — The Colorado Department of Transportation has closed State Highway 24 in both directions at Leadville and at Minturn due to a rockslide. The slide is between Minturn and Red Cliff, and brought down more than 150 tons of rock onto the roadway. The slide happened around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday and has caused significant damage to the roadway.

Department spokeswoman Tracy Truelove said portions of the road were badly damaged by the slide. As of late Tuesday morning, there was no available estimate about when the road might reopen.

Besides the slide itself, the hillside above the slide may be unstable due to the annual springtime cycle of melting and freezing snow. Geologists are at the scene to assess the safety of the surrounding areas. A helicopter was being brought in Tuesday morning to give specialists a chance to better evaluate the hillside.

Crews are beginning to remove debris from the roadway and begin repairs to the roadway. Some of the boulders have to be blasted apart in order to be picked up and trucked out.
