Summit County defeats Eagle Valley Devils football, 25-7, spoiling Homecoming

GYPSUM — Credit where credit is due.

Summit County made the plays when it counted during a 25-7 victory over Eagle Valley on Friday, Oct. 6, spoiling the Devils' Homecoming in Gypsum.

Not helping matter was the fact that Devils quarterback Jesse Moser went out with a left-leg injury while punting during the second half, compounding Eagle Valley's offensive struggles this season.

The hit drew only a 5-yard running-into-the-kicker flag instead of the 15-yard roughing call, much to the dismay of the Eagle Valley bench.

Up 13-7 during the fourth quarter, the visiting Tigers used the opportunity to seal the game. Tigers quarterback Jake Gillum somehow completed a 45-yard screen to Noah Martens. The senior play caller was absolutely crushed as he released the ball.

Three plays later, Gillum threw a jump ball on fourth-and-14 and his wide receiver Jason Tiley came down with it in the end zone for a 29-yard score.

move the sticks

Summit County broke the seal on Homecoming night, overcoming a holding penalty on the first set of downs on the drive. Gillum popped the first of several bubble screens to Vale Hildebrand, this one for 17 yards.

After some solid carries by Martens (Noah, that is), Gillum to Hildebrand moved the sticks again. The Tigers' Nehemiah Martens popped a 19-yard run brought his team to the doorstep.

Eagle Valley's defense nearly produced a goal-line stand, but Martens (Nehemiah, that is) punched it in on fourth-and-goal from the 1 for a 7-0 lead.

The Devils responded with a lot of Jake Cossette and Zach Carvill on the ground. That set up a 30-yard strike from Moser to Miguel Castillo. Carvill and Cossette finished it with Cosette scoring on a 1-yard run.

Summit County took a 13-7 lead before the half with two quick passing strikes. Gillum found Jason Tilley for 48 yards with 35 seconds left. Gillum then threw a nice slant to Hildebrand for the score.

The Devils head to Palisade on Thursday, Oct. 12, while Summit is at Rifle on Friday, Oct. 13.
