Thursday’s preps wrap: Vail Mountain golf and soccer, Devils and Huskies soccer

MONTROSE — Don’t sleep on Vail Mountain School golf.

The Gore Rangers are surging. After taking second at their home tournament on Tuesday, VMS finished fifth at the Montrose Black Canyon Invitational on Thursday with a season-low score of 243.

The Gore Rangers were tops among 3A squads at Black Canyon.

Finn Sapp fired a 72, tying for fifth individually. Jordan Harrison came around with an 83, despite a quintuple, and Will Richey rounded out the scoring with an 88.

“It’s been huge for them to step it up,” VMS coach Gary Pesso said. “Finn had four birdies, but he could have had eight. He just missed some putts. Jordan expectations are getting higher. He was a little disappointed with that one bad hole.”

The inherent frustrations of golf aside, VMS wraps the regular season at Lakota Canyon and Keystone next week.

EAST VAIL

Jefferson Academy too much for Gore Rangers

Nonconference play is kind of like medicine. It tastes bad going down, but is good in the long run.

That has been the story of Vail Mountain School soccer to date. The Gore Rangers have played a tough schedule and it reflects in a 1-3 record after a 3-0 loss at Jefferson Academy on Tuesday.

Let the record state that Jefferson Academy was in the 3A state finals last year, and the Gore Rangers’ other two losses this season are to Colorado Academy (3A quarterfinalist) and Battle Mountain (4A state finalist).

The old rating-percentage index should be fine, and so should VMS when it comes to 3A Slope play.

“We’re growing as a team,” VMS coach Alex Darby said. “We know what our weaknesses are and using them as learning experiences.”

Against Jefferson Academy, the youngsters got some playing time, including freshmen Dominick Epifanio and Fletcher Holm as well as sophomore Nicolas O’Connell.

VMS was scheduled to host Arupe Jesuit on Saturday, but that game has been postponed because of ACTs. The Gore Rangers open 3A Slope play at Moffat County on Tuesday.

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS

Devils soccer postponed

Eagle Valley soccer at Steamboat Springs on Thursday night was postponed because of poor air conditions from wildfires.

The Devils and Sailors will try again on Tuesday.

Eagle Valley soccer is at Holy Family on Saturday.

EDWARDS

Huskies pummel Rifle

This week’s job is simple for Battle Mountain soccer — get the points.

The Huskies smacked Rifle, 9-0, Thursday night in Edwards. Next up is Palisade on Saturday at 6 p.m.

“Get the points and get a lot of kids in,” Huskies coach David Cope said. “And some of our subs came in and made the most of their opportunity.”

Jesus Dozal, Kingston Lindner, Jorge Membreno had two goals each. Axel Olivera, Harry Jaffe and Luke Wilson also found the back of the net.

Alan Villegas and Jackson Borg shared the shut out in net for Battle Mountain (3-1 overall and 2-0 in the Slope).
