Tuesday’s preps sports wrap
October 3, 2012
LITTLETON – Welcome to the big show, kids.
Battle Mountain cross country, especially when it came to the girls’ team, threw a bunch of youngsters into the deep end of the pool Tuesday at the Dakota Ridge Invitational Tuesday, and the kids can swim, er, run.
“The biggest thing is race experience,” Huskies coach Ryan Mathews said. “In general, when they race varsity for the first time, it scares them. Once they have their first race under their belt, they’re OK. ‘I can do this'”
Depth has been a big issue for both local squads – Eagle Valley as well – with a new rule change for regionals. Each school can send nine runners, as opposed to the usual seven. While the top five score for each team, depth is desired to push back the places of other schools’ runners in the scoring.
Thus, a rare Tuesday meet and some fresh faces.
David Suarez topped the boys with a time of 18 minutes, 27 seconds. (Fear not, David, soccer won easily Tuesday night, 6-1, against Glenwood Springs.) Joseph Barrett (18:31), Cameron Moore (19:27) and Ethan Pence (19:38) were familiar faces in familiar places. Josh Braun (20:00), Jake Borel (20:40) and Kobi Simonton (20:49) put their names in the hat for regionals in Delta.
Jenai Denardo led the ladies with a 23:07, followed by Adrianna Farnen (23:26), Katia Lopez (23:34), Anabel Johnson (23:43), Sonia Barnett (23:52), Rochelle Denardo (23:59), Marlene Favela (25:15).
Battle Mountain is Boulder Saturday.
Palisade tops Devils
PALISADE – Eagle Valley volleyball dropped a road league contest to Palisade Tuesday night, 25-19, 25-14, 28-26.
“We fought hard in the third set,” Eagle Valley coach Shawn Weatherred said. “We’re still trying to jerry up some offense. The girls are giving 100 percent and fighting like heck. They don’t quit. They just can’t get over that hump.”
Eagle Valley (2-7) hosts Summit County Thursday at 6 p.m.
Vail Christian falls in four
EDWARDS – The Soroco Rams were rude guests Tuesday night, spoiling Homecoming for Vail Christian, sending the Saints to a 17-25, 26-24, 25-22, 26-24 loss.
Vail Christian (7-7) is at Battle Mountain Monday.
Devils’ game postponed
GYPSUM – No refs, no game.
Eagle Valley soccer postponed its nonconference match Tuesday against Delta because of a lack of referees. No make-up date has been announced.
The Devils host Summit County at Hot Stuff Stadium Thursday at 6 p.m.
