EAST VAIL — Vail Mountain School soccer earned a point in its home opener on Thursday afternoon at venerable Bandoni Alumni Field, drawing with No. 5-ranked Denver Christian, 2-2.

The Gore Rangers (0-1-1) got two goals from senior Clay Kirwood during the first half. The first goal came on a nice build-up from Watts Austin and Dylan Cunningham.

VMS did have a letdown during the first half and that cost the Gore Rangers against a very good Crusaders team.

“I feel like we can play with anybody,” VMS coach Pete Petrovski said. “We focused hard for 70 minutes and spent 10 minutes looking at butterflies, and (Denver Christian) put in two quick goals. It’s a good lesson. After that, we played as hard as I’ve seen them play.”

VMS’ next game is Tuesday at home against Aspen.
