EDWARDS — The rest of the people in the Homestead Court Club were playing tennis. Venus Williams was playing something more.

Williams, one of the world’s top players for more than a decade, was in town to speak to a corporate function in a local hotel. While she was here, she stayed sharp by hitting for a few days in the Homestead Court Club.

“It was fun having her here,” said Tom Ewert, tennis pro with wife, Laura, at Homestead Court Club.

Vail Valley locals are pretty good about leaving celebrities alone when they’re in town, and no one bothered Williams while she was working. But the Homestead folks did watch from a respectful distance.

Text messages flew out: “You’re not going to believe who’s at Homestead.”

Williams was doing some of the same stuff most tennis players do, only much, much better.

“The best thing about having her here is having our members and kids watching,” Ewert said. “To have Venus here a month after she was in the Australian Open final is really special.”
