The Congress performs in Avon Friday
February 14, 2013
When members of Denver band The Congress stumbled upon a 30-something-year-old reel to reel tape machine a few months ago, inspiration struck.
“(We) figured it would be a good idea to learn how to do our own recording by making an album of old soul covers that we’ve been playing a lot recently,” said Guitarist Scott Lane. “We tracked seven tunes out live and mixed it in a couple days, arranging everything on the spot.”
Chris Speasmaker from Fox Street Allstars played keys on the new EP, which will be released in March.
“It is an incredibly honest representation of what we sound like, blemishes and all,” Lane said. “We hope to get people hip to some of the best old music out there – guys like Curtis Mayfield, Donny Hathaway, Sly, etc.’
If you’re lucky, you’ll hear some soul songs off the new EP Friday night, when the band takes the stage at Montanas in Avon. Lane took the time to answer a few questions for the Vail Daily.
Vail Daily: Tell me about something else new and exciting in the band’s life?
Scott Lane: The tape machine we bought is probably the coolest thing I’ve experienced in a while. Not only are we learning to make our own albums, but we’re learning general recording knowledge and getting an awesome skill that we didn’t have before. Also, we’ve gotten the chance to play the Odgen Theater twice in the past couple months, that has been an incredible experience.
VD: When do you expect the EP to be available? And how would people get it?
SL: We are looking to release it at our Bluebird Theater show on March 16th. It’ll be available on iTunes and all the normal online outlets, and you can grab a physical copy from our website or from us at a show.
VD: When/where was the last time you all performed in our area? Anything interesting happen at that show?
SL: We played at Shakedown Bar recently, and the Wilco aftershow at Agave. The hope is that our music is interesting enough – wish I could tell you some dude went streaking through the crowd, but I haven’t seen it yet.
VD: Will you be attending the WinterWonder Grass Festival, which takes place in Edwards Saturday and Sunday?
SL: No, we have to take off for tour the next day up in Idaho and Wyoming. I’m sure it will be a hell of a time though.
