Vail Daily letter: Breakaways rule! Come to fundraiser
April 2, 2013
If you haven’t heard of the Vail Breakaways, you need to read this!
The Vail Breakaways are your local Division A women’s hockey team and we have quite a history in the Vail Valley and throughout Colorado. The team has been in existence for over 30 years and has won the Colorado state title nine times in the last 16 years. The Breakaways are so deeply rooted in the Vail Valley that multiple families have had women playing on the team for two or three generations!
The Vail women’s ice hockey team began in 1977 with a group of women who had never played hockey before. As the league has grown throughout the years, so has the caliber of play. Several teams throughout the state have elite college players and professionals from central Europe competing.
The Breakaways made the history books in 1996 as the first women’s ice hockey team from North America to compete in China.
The Breakaways lost to the Denver Bandits in the final game of the 2001-02 season and finished second in state. They came back in 2002-03 and reclaimed the Stella Cup with their victory over the Aspen Mother Puckers and were Stella Cup runners-up in 2003-2004. In 2012 the Breakaways reclaimed the cup – beating CSU in an emotional final game. This year we ended the season as division leaders, despite not bringing back the cup back.
The Breakaways will be hosting a fundraiser on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Garfinkle’s in Lionshead. There will be free beer with the purchase of a $10 ticket, drink specials and great giveaways! All of our proceeds help us pay for tournament fees, ice time and referees. This is sure to be a fun night, so don’t miss out!
