Vail Daily letter: Despair, determination

Don Bissett
Vail, CO, Colorado

I received this from a minister friend and thought it worth passing along. He expresses many of my feelings of despair and the determination that action must be taken.

“A Litany of Grief and Hope”

When I am faced with indescribable horror …

When children are forever torn from their parents …

When teachers, protectors give their lives for their students …

When first responders are rendered impotent …

When parents gaze upon empty chairs, empty beds …

When violence renders brothers and sisters only children …

When days of promise turn to days of grief and misery …

My heart is moved by all I cannot save.

And yet:

When days seem darkest and nights seem longest …

When grief seeks to subdue and overwhelm me …

When I am feeling powerless and hopeless …

When my lone voice seems small and inadequate …

When the world cries out for justice and mercy …

When the world cries out for safety and security …

When doing nothing is no longer an option …

When I refuse to let one more innocent child die …

I cast my lot with those who reconstitute the world.

By the Rev. Peter Friedrichs, of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Delaware County, Media, Pa.
