Vail Valley Voices: Eagle board starts evening with tour

Brandi ResaVail, CO, Colorado

The latest Eagle Board of Trustees meeting started early with a tour of the Swallow Oil Site off Grand Avenue. After a short break, the four members present started the regular meeting with approval of the prior meeting minutes. Next up was public comment from some youth in the community. These adventurous kids shared information on their upcoming trip as part of the Children’s Global Alliance (go to http://www.childrensglobalalliance.org to donate toward these Eagle youngsters!). Two liquor licenses were next. First up was setting the neighborhood boundaries and a public hearing date for Yummy Cafe’s request for a new license. The previously continued license of the Back Bowl (www.thebackbowl.com) was then approved after a short discussion with the business manager. The Vail Library is hoping for a lot of discussion because of their efforts with One Book, One Valley (www.coloradomtn.edu/onebook). To recognize this, a proclamation was read into the record by Mayor Kostick. The Inyodo Martial Arts Academy’s special use permit was renewed for five years after good discussion with staff and the applicant on the town’s sign code. (The Planning & Zoning Commission is currently reviewing the sign code, so if interested in this issue, sign up for emails at http://www.townofeagle.org).The town staff introduced the new water services counsel team before Colorado Department of Transportation presented the construction that will be happening in and around Eagle. The various projects are a result of several years of teamwork among staff, prior boards and CDOT, and will provide some solutions and a great landmark for the town with the pedestrian bridge that will be built across I-70. A long favorite topic at 200 Broadway, marijuana, was discussed again. This included updating the municipal code because of Amendment 64, along with a proposed emergency ordinance for a moratorium on marijuana clubs. There were not enough members present for an emergency ordinance to pass, but an ordinance was passed with a 4-0 vote.Showing continued support for the Eagle Chamber’s efforts (check out the new website at http://www.eaglechamber.co), the town of Eagle became an executive member and will sponsor the Screaming Eagle Golf Tourney to be held on May 31 at Eagle Ranch Golf Course.Although it would seem spending money on events should be only a fun topic, the recommendation of the MEAC committee presented by staff turned into a more lengthy discussion than probably planned. In the end, the funding for the Eagle Outside Festival to be held on Mother’s Day weekend May 11 and 12 was approved with a 2-1 vote, as one member abstained. Discussion items included the Wolcott development, but this topic will be revisited when more of the board is present, as will the Eco Transit update. The manager items included an update on the total expenses spent to date ($150) on the town manager search. Board comments and future agenda items included a desire to understand what our schools are doing for safety, a request for the board to do performance reviews for those under their purview, a process for an official documented response to public comment, and a desire to find out what it would take to film meetings.Until the latter happens, please mark your calendar to spend Tuesday, Feb. 12, or another second or fourth Tuesday of the month with your elected officials.
