Avon fight at Tarnes building ends in stabbing, girlfriend flees with drugs

AVON — Witnesses held down a stabbing suspect at a party until police could arrive to arrest him, police said.

Chase Allen Speegle, 19, is in jail after a party at the Tarnes employee housing went bad. He and his girlfriend, Aliyah Dolores McVay, 18, went to a party in one of the Tarnes buildings carrying a tan backpack and almost immediately started trouble. Witnesses say the backpack contained a “very large quantity” of illegal drugs, including cocaine, a methamphetamine derivative called mali and LSD.

The apartment’s occupants said they didn’t want any trouble and asked Speegle and McVay to leave.

The two left but returned a short time later and started a fight, police said. Witnesses say Speegle stabbed the victim in the back with a 7-inch knife.

Eagle County paramedics rushed the 24-year-old victim to the Vail Valley Medical Center, where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Witnesses at the party held Speegle down and police quickly arrived. They arrested Speegle and booked him into the Eagle County jail on charges of felony assault with a deadly weapon, misdemeanor false reporting to authorities, misdemeanor trespassing and illegal possession of alcohol by a minor.

McVay fled the scene with the tan backpack full of drugs. Police quickly tracked her down, but she had already ditched the backpack. She refused to cooperate with authorities, police said.

McVay, 18, was arrested and charged with felony destruction of evidence and misdemeanor obstructing a peace officer. She’s being held in the Eagle County jail on $2,000 bond.

Both Speegle and McVay are from East Wenatchee, Wash., and told people at the party that they had just arrived in town.

Police are trying to locate the backpack. Call the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office at 970-328-8500 with information.

There’s a reward up to $1,000.
