What to watch at the Vail Film Festival Saturday and Sunday
Ryan Summerlin March 30, 2012
The Vail Film Festival continues Saturday and Sunday with movies about love, death, dogs and everything in between. Lucky for you (and us) we had a chance to screen the films in advance. Here are four films – two student films and two documentaries – that spoke to us, and that we think you’ll enjoy.
“One Night Stand” – 4:45 p.m. Saturday at Four Seasons in Vail and 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Cinebistro.
You’ve heard of the 24-hour film festival, but have you seen a 24-hour musical? A funny look at the making of a musical in one day that features well-known performers such as Rachel Dratch from “Saturday Night Live” and Jesse Tyler Ferguson of “Modern Family.”
“The Happy Ones” – 10 a.m. Saturday and 12:30 p.m. Sunday at Four Seasons Vail.
A young wanderer roams around Los Angeles, connecting with others only for an instant. Watching it feels like a dream that one is unable to forget.
“Zero Percent” – 2:15 p.m. Saturday at Four Seasons in Vail and 8:30 p.m. Sunday at Cinebistro.
Inside the walls of Sing Sing prison, a maximum security facility in New York, almost 2,000 men sit in cell blocks serving time for violent crimes against humanity. Many of them continue a life of crime inside the prison walls, but many also choose another path. The Hudson Link for Higher Education in Prison is a program designed to educate inmates on a college level so they can earn degrees and re-enter the work force once they serve their sentences. “Zero Percent” is full of inspiring interviews with graduates of the program who have grown to move past their own failures and move on to a new beginning. We also see the effect prison has on the families of inmates and we get to see a graduating class figure out how to adapt to life outside prison walls.
“Role Play” – 10 a.m. Saturday and 12:30 p.m. Sunday at Four Seasons in Vail.
Role playing can be a good way to spice up any love life, but what this couple does to find excitement goes well beyond conventional methods.
