Vail Daily letter: Fore!

Close your eyes. Can you hear the birds singing? Smell the fresh cut grass? Feel the cool mountain breeze? Taste the remnants of growth regulator? Imagine yourself immersed in toil the likes of “Game of Thrones.” Pars smashing bogeys with irons of rage, birdies jockeying for knighthood, eagles rising to become powerful kings. Do you have what it takes to become a champion? When it all comes down to the last shot, a final catapult to breach the defenses, will you have the nerve to keep your head still and your heart calm? I’m talking match play golf. April showers have turned to May flowers. With that, local golf courses have been taking advantage of early season sunshine.

Sonnenalp Golf Club in Edwards hosts the 14th Annual Valley Scratch Match qualifiers in the coming weeks (May 10 and May 14). Open to players with a valid GHIN handicap Index of 12.0 or below, the event has seen its fair share of talented golf. From Colorado Senior Stroke Play champion Harry Johnson, to current Colorado Mid-Amateur Keith Humrickhouse, current mini-tour rookie Cameron Brown, to past Colorado Senior Match Play Champion Ken Sady, this event brings out top quality golfers from surrounding courses and counties. Hosted throughout the summer, an entry fee of $100 covers the qualifying rounds and any subsequent rounds as well as awards and prizes. Winners of matches continue on, those who lose will live to fight another day. Neil Tretter and his maintenance staff at Sonnenalp Golf Club have been working tirelessly to get the most out of the south facing track, as fast and firm green surfaces are the norm at Sonnenalp, and this spring is no different.

For those golfers looking for a great season long event with top quality golf on a top rated course, I recommend contacting Pete Roach or George Hart at the Sonnenalp Golf Club 970-477-5371
